FAQs for Families & Applicants

Life Interrupted Foundation

Who is eligible to apply?

Eligibility varies slightly by program — see full details in our Eligibility Guidelines.

In general, applicants must be immediate family of someone who passed away, be able to show they were financially impacted by the loss (funeral costs, rent, bills, etc.), and have a total household income of $60,000 or less for the calendar year. Applicants cannot have received life insurance proceeds related to the loss, and must have no criminal background. Because funding is limited, we have to be strict about eligibility. Please review the full criteria before applying.

What’s the timeframe for applying after a loss?

Essential Needs Grant: the death must have occurred within 6 months of applying, since this program is designed to provide immediate support.

Children’s Scholarship: the death must have occurred within 12 months of applying.

If your loss falls outside these timeframes, you are not eligible to apply or reapply for that program.

What can I apply for?

Two programs: the Essential Needs Grant  (up to $2,500, for essential costs like funeral expenses, rent, and bills) and the Children’s Scholarship (up to $500, deposited directly into a 529 account for a child who lost a parent or sibling).

Both programs require you to be immediate family of the deceased and have been financially impacted by the loss.

How do you decide who receives funding?

Applicants must meet strict eligibility criteria, including proof of financial impact, income limits, and timing since the loss. Because funding is limited and we’re entrusted with donor dollars, we’re intentional and careful about every award — not every applicant who qualifies will receive funding, and awards are not guaranteed at the maximum amount.

When can I apply?

We run two funding cycles per year, in July and December. Our next cycle opens November 1, 2026and closes December 1, 2026. Applications are only accepted during open cycles.

What documents do I need?

Your application must be fully complete, including any requested photos or supporting documentation. If any part of your application is missing or incomplete, or if you’re unable to provide a requested document, your application will not be considered. Please review everything carefully before submitting.

Will I need to complete a background check?

Yes. All applicants must agree to a background check as part of the application process.

How and when will I hear back?

Awarded families are notified two weeks after the application deadline. Please note that we’re unable to provide status updates by phone or email while applications are under review.

Am I guaranteed funding if I apply?

Unfortunately, no. Because funding is limited and we’re entrusted with donor dollars, we’re unable to fund every eligible applicant, and award amounts are not guaranteed at the maximum. We review every application carefully through our Grant Committee and Board of Directors.

What if I don’t qualify for a grant? Is there anything else you can help with?

Yes. Visit our Partners & Resources page for organizations we trust for financial coaching, grief support groups, children’s grief camps, and more.

I have a question that’s not answered here. Who do I contact?

Please reach out to info@lifeinterruptedfoundation.org. Our team is not able to respond to inquiries about the status of a submitted application.
